Pogostemon Helferi (Downoi) (Pogostemon helferi)

Pogostemon helferi, known as Downoi, forms low star-shaped rosettes of crinkled, wavy-edged leaves that make an unmistakable foreground accent. It does best with strong light, CO2, and good calcium and micronutrient levels, which keep the curly leaves compact and the clumps spreading. Without enough light or CO2 it grows tall and loses the tight, crinkled form that makes it special.

Propagation

It produces side shoots and runners from the base; separate the new rosettes once they root, or cut and replant tops.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Downoi growing tall and leggy instead of staying low?

Stretching means it needs more light, and usually CO2. Under high light with CO2 it stays low and crinkled; in dim tanks it reaches upward and loses its compact star shape.

Does Pogostemon helferi need anything special in the water?

It responds strongly to adequate calcium and a full micronutrient mix, in addition to CO2 and bright light. Deficiencies show as stunted or pale new rosettes, so steady fertilization keeps it healthy.
