Blueberry Snail (Viviparus sp.)

Blueberry snails are small blue-grey viviparids that do quiet, useful work: grazing film algae, eating detritus, and — unusually for a snail — filter-feeding particles straight from the water column. They prefer their water on the cooler side of tropical and appreciate some current and oxygen. As livebearers they produce a few fully formed young at a time, never a swarm.

Frequently asked questions

Will blueberry snails overrun my tank?

No. Like all trapdoor-type livebearing snails they reproduce slowly, releasing a handful of developed babies per year, and you need both a male and a female to get any at all.

Do blueberry snails need a heater?

Usually not. They are comfortable from the mid 60s to the high 70s, which covers most room-temperature tanks. Sustained water above 80°F shortens their lifespan — they would rather be slightly cool than slightly hot.
