Spixi Snail (Asolene spixi)

The spixi snail's claim to fame is unique in the hobby: it eats hydra, the stinging pest that plagues shrimp-breeding tanks, and it does so while being a handsome striped apple snail that stays small. The honest caveat is that it is still an apple snail — well-fed spixis usually leave plants alone, but hungry ones will sample soft and delicate species, so count it as plant-tolerant rather than plant-proof. Eggs are laid in gelatinous clumps underwater and populations grow slowly.

Frequently asked questions

Do spixi snails really eat hydra?

Yes — it is well documented and the main reason shrimp breeders keep them. A few spixis will graze a hydra outbreak down to nothing over a couple of weeks, with none of the livestock risk of chemical treatments like fenbendazole.

Will spixi snails eat my plants?

When hungry, they can — they are apple snails, and only the mystery snail branch of that family is truly incapable of eating plants. Keep them fed with vegetables and wafers and damage is rare, but do not put them in a high-value aquascape and assume they will behave.
