Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri)

Java Moss is the workhorse of aquarium mosses: it survives almost any light, temperature, and water chemistry, and anchors itself to stone, wood, and mesh. It is the standard choice for shrimp tanks and fry cover, and the easiest way to age a hardscape instantly. Blast detritus out of established pads with a turkey baster during water changes — dense moss traps mulm and browns from the inside if it is never cleared.

Frequently asked questions

How do I attach Java Moss to hardscape?

Spread a thin layer over the surface and hold it down with cotton thread, fishing line, or a dab of cyanoacrylate gel glue. It anchors itself with rhizoids within a few weeks; thin layers attach faster and look cleaner than thick clumps.

Why is my Java Moss turning brown in the middle?

Dense clumps shade their own interior, and the starved inner growth browns while the outside stays green. Trim it back regularly so light and flow reach the base, and the patch will stay green throughout.
