Monte Carlo (Micranthemum tweediei 'Monte Carlo')

Monte Carlo is the most achievable true carpeting plant: round, bright-green leaves that creep along the substrate and form a dense lawn. It carpets fastest with CO2 and medium light, but unlike its lookalike dwarf baby tears, it can still form a respectable carpet in a low-tech tank given patience and good substrate.

Propagation

Cut runners or split a mat into plugs and replant them a couple of inches apart; plugs knit together into a carpet.

Frequently asked questions

Can Monte Carlo carpet without CO2?

Yes, with caveats: growth is several times slower, it carpets thinner, and it needs a nutrient-rich substrate and at least solid medium light to stay compact. Plant plugs densely from the start and expect three months or more for coverage instead of weeks.

Why is my Monte Carlo carpet detaching and floating up?

Carpets lift when the mat grows too thick — the lower layer dies back in its own shade and loses grip. Mow the carpet down to about half an inch every few weeks and press loose sections back in so the runners re-anchor.

Why is my Monte Carlo growing up instead of out?

Upright, leggy stems mean the plant is reaching for light it is not getting — under sufficient intensity it hugs the substrate and creeps sideways. Raise the light's output or move the fixture closer, then trim off the vertical growth so the new runners restart low and horizontal.
