Japanese Trapdoor Snail (Cipangopaludina japonica)

Japanese trapdoor snails are the cold-water workhorse: hardy down to the 50s, happy in unheated tanks and outdoor ponds, and among the longest-lived aquarium snails at five-plus years with good shell care. The hinged trapdoor (operculum) seals them in against predators and drought. They are livebearers that produce a few babies at a time, so they never crash a tank with offspring the way egg-laying pond snails do.

Frequently asked questions

Do Japanese trapdoor snails need a heater?

No — this is the snail for unheated setups. They are comfortable from the low 50s through the high 70s and routinely overwinter in outdoor ponds under ice. In a tropical tank above 80°F their metabolism runs hot and lifespan shortens noticeably.

Will trapdoor snails reproduce out of control?

No. They are slow livebearers — a female releases small numbers of fully formed young a few times a year, and you need both sexes. Pond keepers usually buy them by the dozen precisely because the population grows so slowly.
