Pom Pom Crab (Ptychognathus barbatus)

The pom pom crab is the rare crab you can actually keep in a normal aquarium: it is fully aquatic, stays around an inch, and spends its day sweeping food into its mouth with the fuzzy 'pom poms' on its claws instead of menacing tankmates. No land area, no brackish water, no dismembered fish — the usual crab disclaimers do not apply. Keep a lid on anyway (it is still a crab) and provide leaf litter and crevices for molting.

Frequently asked questions

Will a pom pom crab hurt my shrimp or fish?

It is the most trustworthy crab in the hobby — too small and too busy filter-sweeping detritus to hunt. Sleeping fish and shrimplets are theoretically at risk from any crab, but reports of actual aggression are rare; most keepers run them in shrimp colonies without losses.

Does a pom pom crab need land like other crabs?

No — this is the exception. Ptychognathus barbatus lives fully submerged and does not need a beach or floating platform, though it appreciates hardscape that reaches near the surface. It cannot breed in captivity (larvae need brackish water), so your population stays whatever you stock.
