About Bucephalandra

Buce is what happens when an easy plant becomes a collector's obsession. Like Anubias, it's a rhizome epiphyte: attach it to driftwood or stone, never bury the rhizome, give it low to moderate light, and it quietly thrives without CO2. Unlike Anubias, it comes in hundreds of named varieties from the rivers of Borneo — leaves in deep green, olive, brown, and near-black, many with a blue shimmer under the right light. Growth is slow and deliberate, which keeps rare varieties rare. Expect some melt when a new buce transitions to your water; the rhizome carries it through, and submerged-grown regrowth is often darker and more colorful than what arrived.

Bucephalandra FAQs

Is Bucephalandra hard to keep?

No — it's one of the easiest plants in the hobby wearing a rare-plant price tag. Low light, no CO2, any substrate or none at all: if you can keep Anubias, you can keep buce. The only real rules are don't bury the rhizome and don't panic during transition melt. With Buce, you're getting rarity and color, not difficulty.

Why is my Bucephalandra melting?

Transition. Most buce is grown emersed (leaves above water) or in different water than yours, and it sheds old leaves while adapting — sometimes down to a nearly bare rhizome. As long as the rhizome stays firm and green, the plant is alive and will regrow, usually with better color than before. Keep it attached, keep light and flow consistent, and give it four to six weeks before judging.

What light makes Bucephalandra colorful?

Moderate light brings out the blues and purples — buce shimmer is an iridescence that shows best under decent lighting with good flow carrying nutrients past the leaves. Too much light, though, invites algae onto its slow-growing leaves, the same trade-off Anubias faces. Moderate light, moderate flow, patience: that's the whole recipe.
