FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

How to choose aquarium snails

Selecting aquatic snails depends on balancing biological utility with aesthetic appeal: Nerite snails serve as unmatched, non-reproducing algae grazers for hardscape and glass; Mystery snails (Pomacea bridgesii) offer vibrant coloration and active detritus consumption; Rabbit snails (Tylomelania sp.) gently sift substrate in exotic displays; and Assassin snails (Anentome helena) naturally eradicate invasive pest snail populations. Regardless of species, all aquatic gastropods demand neutral-to-alkaline pH (7.3+) and adequate calcium levels to maintain proper shell density and prevent structural erosion.

Freshwater snail FAQs

Will aquarium snails overpopulate my tank?

Depends entirely on the species — and this is the number-one thing to check before buying. Nerite snails cannot reproduce in freshwater, so their population never grows no matter how many you keep. Mystery snails lay visible egg clutches above the waterline, which you can simply remove if you don't want babies. Rabbit snails release a single juvenile at a time and build numbers very slowly. The snails with a runaway reputation are hitchhiker pest species like bladder and ramshorn snails — which is why buying intentional, known species beats hoping nothing rides in on plants.

What do aquarium snails eat?

Algae, biofilm, and leftover fish food cover most of it — snails are the cleanup crew. In a mature tank, nerites usually find enough algae on their own. Mystery and rabbit snails need supplemental food: algae wafers, blanched vegetables like zucchini, and calcium-rich foods to keep shells healthy. A snail that's constantly roaming the glass in a spotless tank is often a hungry snail. Assassin snails are the exception — they're carnivores that eat other snails and won't touch algae.

Are snails safe with live plants?

The species we sell, yes — nerites, mystery snails, rabbit snails, and assassins graze algae and biofilm off plant leaves without eating healthy plants. Brotias can sometimes nip on a plant's leaves if hungry. A good snail crew actually helps planted tanks by cleaning leaf surfaces so plants get more light.
