How to choose foreground plants

Foreground work is about height discipline: everything up front stays short so the eye travels back through the scape. The honest split is between easy spreaders and true carpets. Easy spreaders — dwarf sagittaria, juncus repens, and micro sword — creep across the substrate in ordinary setups with no CO2, filling in over a couple of months. True carpeting species, such as Dwarf Baby Tears, the putting-green look, mostly demand strong light, CO2, and nutrient-rich substrate; without them they grow leggy or stall. Decide which tank you're running before you buy, plant small portions in a grid a couple of inches apart, and let runners do the rest.

Foreground plant FAQs

Can I grow a carpet without CO2?

A modest one, yes — with the right species and expectations. Runner-type spreaders like dwarf sagittaria will slowly knit across the foreground in a low-tech tank under decent light. What you can't reliably get without CO2 is the dense, low, manicured carpet from contest photos; the demanding carpet species stall or reach for light without injection. Low-tech carpet: possible, slower, a little wilder. Show carpet: bring CO2.

How do I plant a foreground for fastest coverage?

In a grid. Split what you buy into the smallest plantable portions and set them one to two inches apart across the whole area, rather than planting one dense clump. Each portion sends runners toward its neighbors and the gaps close from every direction at once. Use tweezers, anchor each portion just deep enough to hold, and resist rearranging while they root.

Why is my foreground growing tall instead of spreading?

It's reaching for light. Carpeting species grow vertical and leggy when light at substrate level is too weak — the plant's signal to climb instead of creep. Increase intensity (or reduce shading from taller plants and floaters), and trim the leggy growth so new shoots come in low. In deep tanks, light that looks bright at the surface is often dim by the time it reaches the substrate.
