About nerite snails

Nerite snails have earned their reputation one spotless tank at a time. They graze algae and biofilm constantly, they leave healthy plants completely alone, and because their eggs only hatch in brackish water, a nerite in a freshwater tank will never become fifty nerites. Zebra and tiger nerites bring bold shell patterns, horned nerites add tiny spiked shells for nano tanks, and racer varieties come in deep reds and olive greens. Keep water on the harder, alkaline side to protect their shells, and don't expect them to survive on a bare tank — an algae-free tank means you'll need to supplement with algae wafers.

Nerite snail FAQs

Will nerite snails breed in my freshwater tank?

No. Female nerites will lay small white eggs on hardscape and glass, but those eggs cannot hatch in pure freshwater — the larvae require brackish water to develop. This is exactly why nerites are the safest snail you can add: you get full-time algae control with zero risk of a population explosion. If the little white eggs bother you, they can be scraped off hard surfaces, or you can keep a single nerite and see none at all.

How many nerite snails should I get?

A practical rule is one nerite per 5–10 gallons, driven by food supply rather than space. Each snail needs enough algae and biofilm to graze all day, so overstocking leads to hungry snails, not a cleaner tank. Start on the low side — you can always add another if algae keeps ahead of your crew.

What do nerite snails eat?

Algae and biofilm, almost exclusively — soft green algae, diatoms (the brown dusting new tanks get), and the film that grows on every submerged surface. They will not eat your plants. In a newer or very clean tank, supplement with algae wafers or blanched zucchini so they don't starve; a nerite that has stripped a tank clean has nothing left to live on.

Why did my nerite snail stop moving?

Give it time before you worry — nerites regularly rest for a day or two, sometimes tipped over or above the waterline. Gently place a tipped snail upright; they struggle to right themselves on flat glass. A dead snail is unambiguous: the body hangs loose from the shell and there's a distinct sulfur smell within a day. No smell and a sealed-shut trapdoor means it's alive and ignoring you.
